Abstract |
The experiments were conducted during the 1974 and 1975
tagging seasons. Returns from smolts of the Atlantic salmon, which had been
microtagged, were compared to the returns of smolts tagged with Carlin tags.
Microtagged smolts had considerably higher survival rate and only a
fractional tag loss compared with the Carlin-tagged smolts. Carlin tags
impaired oceanic growth. There is an indication that the increase in
survival rate with size of smolts, often found with Carlin tags, is an
artifact of the tag. Different release times were compared and releases in late June appeared to be more favorable – a statement which cannot be generalized for other years. Some differences were noted in favorable release time between different smolt groups, depending on the exposure to heated water in the spring. |
