Abstract |
Magnetic binary-coded microwire tags were used in a tagging experiment, started in 1983, carried out on Atlantic herring Clupea harengus harengus in the northern part of the North Sea. Monitoring for the presence of microtags was carried out in 1984 and 1985 with a prototype mechanized tag-detection system. Petersen estimates of the stock in 1983, derived from the tag-return data, agreed generally with acoustic estimates made in 1983, derived from later VPA assessments. Estimates from the tagging experiment had a high variance, however, because good recruitment in 1984 and 1985 caused low densities of tagged fish. The results suggest that the tag-recapture method can be used successfully for herring stock estimation, but is not the most suitable method for a stock undergoing a rapid expansion. |
